A Comparison Between A Coy working lady friend and To The Virgins======================================================Both Andrew Marvell and Robert Herrick who atomic number 18 writing in the 17th deoxycytidine monophosphate which was in the Romantic period and both numberss are about write out. This comparison ties both poems near together as well astheir identical themes of term running out.Herricks poem To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time is fundamentally ageneral argument that every unrivaled who has not yet found love should makethe most of the short time they have alive and unify someone as soonas possible. The idea of Marvells poem is to get his mistress intobed with him. This means that there will be a contrast at points ofthe poem where some conclusion is reached.Herricks poem is much shorter than Marvells and therefrom his pointis brought across in two metaphors to express it and then a conclusionwhich drives it home. To His Coy sporting lady on the other handcom prises of 3 large verses. The first one is humorous supposedly tobreak down the barrier between him and the girl who the poem is for,the second is used to shock his reader to convince her that she should inject with him and the third verse is an actively persuasive conclusionwhich tells her that he is the whole logical choice for her to take. This means that the short four stanza Herrick poem which is composedentirely of evidence and persuasion to back up his point comparesclosely to Marvells who is also persuading his mistress and leavingher no room to baulk his argument. In Herricks poem, he uses a metaphor of a summit which may be at fullbloom and beautiful instantly but then tomorrow it will be wilting and last by which he means that the young virgins may be bea... ...ll wants (i.e. to stimulate hismistress). This poem is written in rhyming couplets which for most ofthe poem gives it a melodic persuasiveness however on line 24, whichends with the tidings infinity does not rhyme with the line above endingwith the word lie. This is intentional to interrupt the beat of the poemand to disturb the reader so that this word eternity is emphasised andproves the point that when she dies, it will be for ever. Both Herrick and Marvell are male poets from the same romantic periodin the 17th Century and therefore the context and language used intheir poems are comparatively similar. It is also probably since Herrickwas a major influence in the poetic world at the time that Marvellhas read To the Virgins and both authors will therefore havecomparative ideas for example the theme of time which features so potently in both poems.
